MILAN, Italy -- Mauro Icardi scored twice to help Inter Milan beat 10-man Sampdoria 4-0 in Serie A on Sunday and boost its hopes of qualifying for the Europa League. Icardi is living with the ex-wife of former teammate Maxi Lopez, and the Sampdoria forward refused to shake Icardis hand before kickoff. "Icardi shouldnt have done that gesture with his ear, but for the rest he showed a really cool head to deal with the environment that had been created around him," Inter coach Walter Mazzarri said. "We shouldnt forget that he is young and he has this exuberance which lets him be clinical and cool. He can become a great player, as he has that in his DNA." Walter Samuel and Rodrigo Palacio also scored for Inter while Lopez had a penalty saved. Sampdoria played most of the match with 10 men after Eder was shown a second yellow card for his part in a brawl. Inter remained fifth but will be boosted by Parmas 1-1 draw at Bologna and Lazios 4-2 defeat at Napoli. AC Milan is firmly back in the race for a Europa League place as picked up a fourth successive victory with a 1-0 home win against bottom club Catania. Hellas Veronas slim European hopes diminished as it lost 5-3 at home to Fiorentina. Also, Chievo Verona beat Livorno 4-2 in a relegation battle, while Torino snatched a dramatic 2-1 win against Genoa. Icardi was booed every time he touched the ball by Sampdoria fans but that seemed to spur him on and he fired Inter in front in the 13th minute. Deafening jeers rang out but Icardi celebrated by cupping a hand to his ear and urging the fans on. Sampdoria could have immediately levelled when it was awarded a penalty after Andrea Ranocchia went into the back of Daniele Gastaldello, but Samir Handanovic denied Lopez. Sampdoria was down to 10 men after a brawl boke out in the 20th minute and Eder, who had been booked for diving, was shown a second yellow and dismissed. Inter doubled its lead on the hour mark when Samuel headed in Hernanes corner and Icardi sealed the result minutes later with his second of the match, driving across from a tight angle. "Icardi lost today," said Sampdoria assistant Nenad Sakic, who was standing in for suspended coach Sinisa Mihajlovic. "That gesture towards his ex-fans and against his ex-club, which made him grow, shows what kind of person he is." Parma is two points behind Inter after rescuing a draw in the lunchtime kickoff. Bologna had only won one of its past nine games but looked to have secured a vital three points thanks to Niccolo Cherubins 44th-minute strike. However, Parma levelled 11 minutes from time when Raffaele Palladino volleyed home Jonathan Biabianys cross. Bologna moved three points clear of the relegation zone, while Parma remained in the Europa League spots -- three points above Milan, Lazio and Torino. Riccardo Montolivo scored the winning goal for Milan, a 30-meter snapshot into the bottom left corner, in the 23rd minute. Catania midfielder Fabian Rinaudo was sent off 12 minutes from time following two yellow cards. It was Maurizio Pellegrinos first match in charge of Catania, after replacing the sacked Rolando Maran. Catania is eight points off safety. Gonazalo Higuain scored a hat trick for Napoli, ending his five-game goal drought. Senad Lulic had given Lazio a surprise lead when he forced his way past Raul Albiol and drilled across into the bottom left corner. Dries Mertens levelled with a swerving shot into the top right of goal shortly before halftime. Lazio was reduced to 10 men at the start of the second period as Lorik Cana was dismissed for a second booking after fouling Mertens. Higuain converted the resulting penalty. The former Real Madrid forward scored twice more, either side of Ogenyi Onazis consolation for Lazio. Torino appeared to be heading for defeat after substitute Alberto Gilardinos late goal. But Ciro Immobile and Alessio Cerci scored stunning strikes into the top right corner within 30 seconds of each other in stoppage time. Fiorentina had beaten Verona 4-3 earlier in the season and the fans were treated to another high-scoring game. Alberto Aquilani scored twice for Fiorentina, and there were also goals for Juan Cuadrado and Borja Valero and a penalty for Alessandro Matri. Jacopo Sala and Juan Iturbe scored for Verona, while former Fiorentina forward Luca Toni converted a penalty. Cheap Jordan 4 . The Canadiens scored twice on the power play and fended off four minor penalties in their 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night. "Special teams are huge every game," said Andrei Markov, who tied the game 1-1 with the man advantage early in the third period. It was the first of three goals for the Canadiens in the final frame. "If you kill a penalty, score a couple of goals, you have a chance to win the game." Montreals power play is by no means modest. The team entered the game sitting sixth in the league with a success rate of 21.5 per cent. But the Canadiens special teams were slumping. They had only scored one power-play goal in their previous 21 opportunities. On Tuesday, Montreal (21-12-3) converted two-of-four chances with the man advantage. Markov scored the first after the Coyotes David Moss took a holding penalty at 2:01 of the third, and Max Pacioretty got the second with Oliver Ekman-Larsson penalized for delaying the game after batting the puck into the netting. Paciorettys 13th of the season was the winner, scored by shooting the puck into traffic in front of Mike Smiths goal. The puck ricocheted off defenceman Michael Stones skate and into the net at 13:18. Coach Michel Therrien put Paciorettys line on the ice for every Canadiens power play. Montreals power forward finished the game with 4:03 of ice time with the man advantage. "When coach gives you that type of opportunity, you want to deliver," said Pacioretty, who also assisted on Markovs goal. "Especially when things arent going how you want them to go, when he gives you an opportunity like that you want to prove that hes making the right decision. "I think that was our motivation as a line to step up." Former Canadien Mike Ribeiro also looked to special teams as his teams downfall. The Coyotes (18-10-5) were leading 1-0 before Moss headed to the penalty box. "We made mistakes, took some bad penalties," said Ribeiro. "Special units are part of the game, and if you cant get them to click, oftentimes youll lose the game." Ribeiro pointed to a second-period power plaay as the difference in the game.dddddddddddd With Phoenix still in the lead, Brandon Prust was called for roughing at 6:51 of the second. Prust turned the penalty into a four-minute double minor by mouthing something to the referee, and was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. But the Coyotes couldnt muster much offence with the extra skater. "After that power play in which we didnt create anything, they gained momentum," said Ribeiro, who made his eighth career appearance versus Montreal since being traded in 2006. "Our special teams didnt create momentum, didnt create much. They came back and scored." "Its disappointing. Its part of the game, but you cant take that and be happy about it. You need to grind it out and be stronger." Mikkel Boedker got the Coyotes on the board at 6:14 of the first period, banking his own rebound off his skate and into the net for his tenth goal of the year. The Coyotes outshot the Canadiens 15-3 in the first and had another 12 attempts blocked by Montreal players. The Canadiens threatened the Phoenix net with more gusto in the second, but still couldnt put one past Smith. The home team came close to tying the game when Pacioretty fired a one-time shot off the crossbar late in the period. Montreal finally found its equalizer to start the third when Markov beat Smith between the legs with a slapshot from the point. "As soon as Markov fired that one in, he didnt show too much emotion," said Pacioretty of the game-tying goal. "But you know hes fired up when he leans into a slapshot like that. It got the guys going a bit." After Pacioretty made it 2-1, he added an empty-netter to seal the victory. Carey Price stopped 26 of 27 shots for Montreal, while Smith made 26 saves for the Coyotes. Notes: Phoenix hasnt won in Montreal since 1996. a The win was Montreals first when trailing after two periods (1-10-1). a Rene Bourque was in the lineup after missing the last seven games with a lower body injury. a Phoenix captain Shane Doan was absent (illness). a The Coyotes current road trip takes them to Toronto next. a The Canadiens and Coyotes meet once more this season on March 6, 2014, in Glendale, Arizona.
